In Eric Rohmer’s wry, gracefully constructed fourth entry in his cycle of Comedies and Proverbs, a young woman learns the hard way that “he who has two women loses his soul; he who has two houses loses his mind.” Interior designer Louise (Pascale Ogier) lives in the suburbs of Paris with her architect lover Remi (Tcheky Karyo), whose wish to settle down clashes with her desire for freedom and excitement. When she takes a pied-à-terre in the city as a way to assert her independence, it comes with unintended consequences that quickly upend her sense of stability.
