Voice of La Raza

William Greaves 1971

A powerful amalgam of William Greaves’s diverse documentary strategies, Voice of La Raza features actor Anthony Quinn as narrator, interviewer, and subject in this pointed critique of the structural inequalities keeping the U.S. Latino population in a social and economic ghetto. Quinn puts probing questions to Latinos on the street (including actor Rita Moreno) about their personal encounters with discrimination, shares his own experiences of poverty and oppression from his childhood in Mexico, and visits the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as it attempts to address the country’s endemic marginalization of one of its largest minority communities. Finally, in an explosive cinema-verité climax, featuring a young college radical who charges a group of corporate-sector Latinos with selling out, Greaves himself intervenes, encouraging the participants to reflect on the heated dialogue’s political significance.
