Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take 2 1/2

William Greaves United States, 2005

Following the early-1990s rediscovery of the then-undistributed and -unseen Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One, a sequel to the project was undertaken by William Greaves with support from actor Steve Buscemi and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, both proponents of the director’s maverick vision. Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take 2½ incorporates outtakes from the filming of Take One as well as footage of a Q&A with Greaves and Buscemi following the first film’s screening at the 1999 Hamptons International Film Festival. A third section features Take One actors Audrey Henningham and Shannon Baker reuniting in 2003 for another multicamera Central Park shoot in which their characters confront each other after more than three decades of estrangement—as do the actors, in a convulsive, psychodramatic break from their on-screen roles. Expanding the parameters of Take One via new filmmaking technology and an emphasis on the melancholic toll of time, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take 2½ enters into a fun-house-mirror dialogue with its ahead-of-the-times predecessor in ways both stylistically ingenious and unexpectedly emotional.
