From These Roots

William Greaves 1974

Created for the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, From These Roots offers an enlightening overview of the Harlem Renaissance, from its historical influences to its lasting legacy as one of America’s landmark eras of Black artistry and expression. Built upon montage sequences of archival photography, the film pioneered what eventually became known as the “Ken Burns style” of documentary, with narrator Brock Peters providing a sweeping survey of the vibrancy of the movement’s most famous figures (W. E. B. DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, and Claude McKay, among others.) and the myriad ways their trailblazing works reflected—and continue to reflect—the Black experience within an exclusionary society.
