My Childhood

Bill Douglas United Kingdom, 1972

In the first installment in his autobiographical coming-of-age trilogy, director Bill Douglas draws on his poverty-stricken childhood in 1940s Scotland to tell the story of Jamie (Stephen Archibald), an eight-year-old boy growing up in a harsh mining village under the care of his maternal grandmother. With his own parents absent, Jamie finds rare warmth through an unexpected bond with a German POW.
