In Tokyo Melody, American director Elizabeth Lennard captures Sakamoto at the height of his mid-80s powers: commandeering seminal electropop outfront Yellow Magic Orchestra in front of sell-out crowds, painstakingly exploring state-of-the-art computer technology while crafting his latest studio album, and touching on everything from Debussy to late-capitalism to androgyny in discussing his influences and ambitions. The result is not only an intimate portrait of Sakamoto but also a lyrical panorama of Tokyo, the postmodern metropolis whose kaleidoscopic sights and sounds inspire the artist’s vision of a music for the disorienting yet exhilarating future.
